SAQA New Mexico Exhibition at Santa Fe Capitol Rotunda

Structural Diversity is the theme for the Studio Art Quilt Associates fiber art exhibit at the State Capitol building.  Everyone is invited to the Opening Reception from 4-6 on Apr 14. SAQA quilts are always innovative and a pleasure to see. The show runs from April 15-Aug 17.

Albuquerque Fiber Arts Fiesta Set for May 19-21 at State Fair Grounds

The 11th Biennial Juried Show and Fiber Arts Exhibition will be open daily from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. May 19-21 (Not Memorial Day Weekend).  This is a great show that includes many quilts ranging from traditional to art quilts. Many Santa Fe area quilters enter this show and many have won in past years. Santa Fe Quilting and Sewing Center of Santa Fe are co-sponsoring an award for the Best Medium Sized Art Quilt at the show. The exhibit is at Expo New Mexico (NM Fair Grounds) in the Manual Lujan Complex in Albuquerque.  

Our Latest New and Unusual Classes

What do Dance of the Dragonflies, Bears Come Out at Night, Antelope Canyon, Moons of Mars, Butterfly Batik Panel and Keyboard Kaleidoscope have in common?  They are all new classes.  Dance of the Dragonflies is a precut laser cut kit that Deb Martinez will help you fuse to the background of your choice. Her Keyboard Kaleidoscope is a large quilt using traditional and kaleidoscope blocks. Antelope Canyon, with Julee, can be made into a wall hanging or bed quilt.  She also offers Moons of Mars, a stunning red quilt with black and neutral accents. Jean Callaghan offers her award-winning Butterfly Batik Panel Quilt. Bears Come Out at Night, offered by Louise, uses the Square in a Square ruler to create a traditional block.  

Bags, Containers & Wall Hangings

Learn how to create a leafy landscape with lots of trees in Nicole Dunn’s Tree’s wall hanging class. You will also learn about creating depth and texture.  Julee Coffman offers the oversized Maxwell Bag with circular handles to showcase your favorite fabrics. Louise Heine offers Cell/Phone/Travel Purse which is quick and fun.  Cindy Barfield offers Pop Up Containers and Filigree Pouch.

Placemats & Stunning Jacket Classes Offered

Aquarius Jacket, is Carolyn Randle’s wild new jacket class. Check out her store sample and sign up! Some experience having sewn clothing is helpful. Need a quick idea for Mother’s Day presents?  Try one of these: Twirl and Swirl Placemats with Cindy or Simply on the Edge Placemats with Louise.

Collage: Back By Popular Demand!

The Collage classes have been very popular and will be offered again by Carolyn and Mary McCusker using your choice of four patterns created by Laura Heine.  Fussy cut lots of blossoms from various materials and then arrange and sew them to create a design of your choice. Check out the store sample.  

Projects in Grocery Sacks

Our classroom is open for free use to complete old projects from 10 am-5 pm, Apr 10 & 24; May 1 & 22; and June 12 & 26.

SFQ Will BE Closed:  Easter, April 16; Mother’s Day, May 14; Memorial Day, May 29 & Father’s Day, June 18.

Even More Creative Classes Offered

Nicole is offering her delightful Clamshells quilt again, which is made using a large fusible pattern and your choice of colors.  Cindy has Labyrinth Walk, which creates an amazing 3-dimensional looking quilt. Deb offers Tessellations, an Alison Glass quilt, that uses light and dark values to create a stunning result. Louise offers Wall Savvy, which creates a triptych wall hanging or 3 table runners. Short Cuts, with Mary, is a fun and easy class using 10 inch squares. Kathy Tolbert is offering her Zia Quilt, which involves piecing and foundation piecing work. Learn how to do surface stitching the Japanese way with Leatrice Armstrong, who teaches Sashiko, a thread work class.

Block of the Month Classes

Quilt Block Cookbook with Deb creates a new look using traditional blocks.  Sign up soon, the first class has occurred but late starters are welcome. Talking Points, Cindy’s beautiful award winning quilt for intermediate quilters, is finishing up and will be offered again. If you are interested sign up for the short introductory class in June. Cindy’s Green Tea and Sweet Beans is a fun Australian designed quilt and welcomes newcomers anytime.  

Beginning Quilting & Wool Classes

Marianne Udell offers Introduction to Wool Work where you will learn the basics of stitching wool wall hangings. Mary continues to offer Beginning Machine Piecing and Bindings. Cindy offers both Hand Applique and Hand Quilting and Making a T-Shirt Quilt.  Deb offers Free Motion Quilting. Cindy also will teach Two Color Binding Tool Class.

Pre-Order Katie Pasquini’s Book

Artful Log Cabin, Katie’s new book, will be released April 17. Pre-order it at SFQ.  Katie taught this class for us last year as she was writing the book.  Formerly from Santa Fe, Katie now lives in Northern California, but visits Santa Fe often.

New Arrivals Including Kaffe Fabric 

We will receive monthly shipments of Kaffe Fassett fabrics, bright batiks and fabrics from Hoffman, Robert Kaufman, Timeless Treasures, Andover and Windham. Unusual Michael Miller Minkee is coming too. Think Minkee for adults!  We have new wools and tools for felting too. We have Debby Maddy’s patterns and a complete set of Kathy Tolbert’s Santa Fe Triptych at a discounted price. 

Tuffet Classes Offered              

We have scheduled more Tuffet classes with Candace Gillis.  Buy a kit, select your fabric and make a colorful sit-upon or stool. You can choose a round or square Tuffet kit.
